Juvenile Criminal Defense Services
At the Yolo County Public Defender's Office, we provide robust legal representation to youth accused of crimes. We understand that young people often find themselves in difficult situations, and we will passionately advocate to ensure that our clients receive fair treatment, comprehensive defense, and the support necessary for their rehabilitation.

First Court Appearance
When charges are formalized in a delinquency petition, children are entitled to legal representation, typically provided by the Public Defender's office who is appointed as soon as the first court appearance. In instances where multiple youth are involved, one may receive representation from our office while another may be appointed a different court-appointed counsel. Our attorneys are committed to navigating the complexities of the youth court system, advocating for the best interests of each minor.
Following an arrest, a detention hearing is held promptly to determine whether the youth will remain in custody at juvenile hall or be released under probation supervision. These hearings are critical as they set the tone for the adolescent's case and influence their path moving forward. Our skilled attorneys advocate for our youth, ensuring that detention remains the exception and that no young person is detained when less restrictive alternatives are available.
Confidentiality and Record Sealing
Youth proceedings in Yolo County are conducted with strict confidentiality to protect the privacy of minors. Recognizing the long-term implications of an adolescent's record, the Public Defender's Office actively seeks automatic sealing of eligible petitions upon case dismissal. While certain offenses and circumstances may restrict eligibility for sealing, we are committed to advocating for our clients' futures and minimizing the repercussions of their legal troubles.
Commitment to Rehabilitation
Our office is dedicated to ensuring that young people receive not only legal defense but also access to supportive services that promote their long-term success and well-being in the community. Working collaboratively with social services, educational programs, and mental health resources to help guide our clients toward positive outcomes. The Yolo County Public Defender's Office stands as a steadfast advocate for the rights and interests of young people throughout their legal journey. Our attorneys are not just legal representatives, they are dedicated supporters who understand the challenges faced by young people in the legal system. We believe that every youth deserves a fair chance to learn, grow and thrive.
